The Story

How it all started

Back in 2008, I was 32 years old and honestly pretty stuck. A knee injury from a running accident had left me sidelined for months, and I'd spent most of that time convinced my active days were behind me. That's when a friend dragged me to a salsa class in Dublin's Southside — not because I wanted to go, but because she wouldn't stop asking.

That first night was terrible. I couldn't feel the beat. My knee was stiff. I had no rhythm to speak of. But something about it just clicked. Not the dancing itself — that took years — but the idea that movement could feel good again. That I wasn't broken.

I completed my degree in Exercise and Health Sciences at UCD while attending classes religiously. By 2012, I'd qualified as a certified Latin dance instructor through the Royal Academy of Dance in London. But the real turning point came in 2018 when I launched 'Dancing Over 45' in Cork — a monthly meetup that started with just 12 people in a community centre. Two years later, we were hitting 150 participants.

What I learned wasn't complicated. Adults over 45 don't need fancy choreography or pressure to perform. They need patience. Modification. Permission to be beginners again. They need community. At turathsa Limited, that's exactly what we've built — over 1,200 active members across Ireland who've discovered that age isn't a barrier to learning, improving, or having genuine fun.

What I Do

Areas of specialisation

Focused on making social dance accessible, welcoming, and genuinely enjoyable for adults 45+ across Ireland

Bachata Instruction

Specialising in beginner-to-intermediate bachata across Dublin venues. I focus on partner connection, musicality, and building confidence in older dancers who haven't danced in years.

Salsa Meetups

Organising inclusive salsa gatherings across Cork and beyond. From social meetups to structured beginner sessions, we've created spaces where age is just a number and everyone's welcome.

Educational Resources

Developing guides, video tutorials, and written resources specifically for adults 45+ learning to dance. Everything's designed with real beginners in mind — no assumptions, clear progression.

Community Building

Curating social dance events that go beyond the steps. We're building genuine friendships, support networks, and a sense of belonging for mature dancers nationwide.

Inclusive Dance Design

Creating beginner-friendly classes that accommodate mobility variations, confidence gaps, and the specific needs of older adults returning to movement after years away.

Event Curation

Over 200 social dance events coordinated across Dublin, Cork, and Galway. I handle venue selection, instructor coordination, accessibility, and creating the right atmosphere for every gathering.

Core Values

How I approach dance and community

Age isn't a limitation

I've seen too many adults convince themselves that 45, 55, or 65 is "too late" to learn something new. It's not. It's never too late. What matters is patience, proper instruction, and a community that gets it. We're not training dancers for competitions — we're helping people rediscover movement, confidence, and joy.

Progress over perfection

You don't need to nail every step to have a good time. You don't need perfect technique to feel proud of yourself. I celebrate the person who learned their first salsa turn after three months just as much as someone who's been dancing for years. Progress is personal.

Community first

The friendships matter more than the footwork. We've had members tell us they joined for the dance but stayed for the people. That's the goal — creating spaces where adults 45+ feel welcomed, valued, and genuinely connected.

Accessibility matters

Whether it's modifying choreography for a knee injury, offering chair-based variations, or finding venues with accessible parking — we think through the details. Dance shouldn't exclude anyone based on age, ability, or experience level.

Community Voices

What dancers are saying

"Wasn't sure I could learn at my age, honestly. But Síle's classes are patient and actually fun. I've been going to the Cork meetups for eight months now and I've made genuine friends. The dancing's better too, but that's almost secondary."

Margaret, 56

"I'd been out of any kind of exercise for years. Started with one beginner class in Dublin and now I go twice a week. My knees feel better, I sleep better, and I don't feel invisible anymore."

Michael, 62

"The thing about Síle's approach is she doesn't pretend we're 25. She modifies everything so it works for real bodies. You're not struggling to keep up — you're actually learning properly. And the community? It's the best part. We're all beginners together."

Patricia, 51

"Started the salsa meetups thinking I'd be the oldest one there. Turned out there were at least 40 people my age or older. We've got a WhatsApp group now and we meet up outside of dance too. It's changed my social life completely."

James, 58
